North West Leicestershire District Council

North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) wanted to develop a new intranet to improve communications across the organisation. The existing intranet was difficult to navigate, visually unappealing, difficult to use and out of date. Staff only used it for a few essential asks and so it was not being used to its full potential.

We carried out interviews with staff from across the Council and at different sites to gain feedback from both current users and non-users of the existing site. We combined this research with existing surveys and desk research to develop a specification for a new intranet. This included management of data, processes and all functionality such as noticeboards, instant messaging, staff profiles, room bookings etc.

Results: An intranet was developed with a new design to ensure a cleaner look and feel with simple, clear navigation. Functionality was developed to ensure the intranet supported the Council both as a business support and a communication tool. We developed a communications plan to ensure staff were kept up-to-date with progress and to ensure a shift in staff’s approach and usage of the new intranet. Staff were also fully trained staff to ensure positive adoption.
